from one runner to another pass it on

I have always wanted to, but….

How many of you have said, “I have always wanted to run a marathon, but I am too old (too fat, too lazy, too busy, too something). Marathon could be exchanged for 5k, 10k, 1/2 marathon or anything challenging enough to peak your interest and your self doubt.

I was too old once, a long time ago. Ten years ago actually. I was sitting on my front porch and my neighbor (a college softball player) was running by. I yelled “How long are you going to run?” She replied, “2o minutes!” I said, “You can’t get a workout only running 20 minutes!” She yelled back, “I don’t know what you are talking about Fat Ass!” I said, “I’ll go run longer than 20 minutes and I haven’t been running in 6 months.” I stormed upstairs, got my shoes and headed out the door. I ran 20 minutes over to our neighboring town and died. I walked back to my house, which took 40 minutes. I suffered, but it was enough to motivate me into signing up for a 5k and I have pretty much have been running ever since.

Whether it be the challenge of a race or just the fact the doctor says you need to make some changes in your life. Take whatever life gives and use it as motivation to push you to new heights.

  1. I couldn’t agree more. Regardless of how short the time or distance, it will still be better than sitting on the couch! I have been jogging for about 10 years. In that time I have started and stopped running about 100 times. As of late, the excuses to not run had really become a crutch so i had to accept the fact that running may never be a convenient thing to do or I will probably never find the “perfect time” to do it.
While many people are intimidated by races (5k, 10K) i have always found that they are a great goal and a way to celebrate your achievement with others. Once you finish your first race or set a PR, you’ll realize that all of those grueling days were worth it!

This made me want to go take a run (except for the part about dying 🙂 ) Thanks for the modivation!!

    • Thanks JoLee. Motivation can come from anyone, anything or anyplace. I have 4 running partners right now and I wouldn’t think of cancelling an appointment with them. It could be the family dog, the scale or trip around a scenic lake. Running can be difficult at first, but when it becomes part of you, the world opens up to unlimitless adventures.
