Bix 7 2016

This is the time of year I become a broken record and profess my love for the Bix 7 road race in Davenport, Ia. A hilly 7 miles with thousands of spectators and participants on an out and back course that give everyone the opportunity to see the elites tear down back half. All of this followed by the best party on the road racing circuit. No, I am not on the payroll of the race nor any of it’s sponsers, but the passion exists because this is one fun race set amid a Jazz Festival, so there is great music all weekend (not all of it Jazz).

Head on out to the QC on July 30, 2016 and enjoy. You will not regret it.

Bix 7 2014

After missing last year’s Bix 7 due to reasons other than physical injury, you could say I have been waiting 2 years to return and run my favorite race. 10 years in a row was a good run and I am looking forward to another 10 as I approach 50 years of age (T minus 2 and counting).
Last year physically was a pleasure. I ran the entire year without pain in my knees yet didn’t run a single road race. This year started off with hamstring and knees issues putting me on the shelf for all of February.
It seems like I have to warm up longer and pay more attention to the little things than the younger me who could fly out the door and run for 2 hours without much thought of stretching or proper hydration.
This being Bix Eve Eve (2 nights prior) I look to hit the sack early and get those z’s that will more than likely elude me tomorrow night as Bix Eve’s tend to do.
So excited to be back, but I am concerned about a goofy hamstring and I strongly hope I have no issues on the hills of Davenport, IA Saturday morn. For the love of running and for the love of Bix.
Plus I looking forward to seeing Meb since he ran past me as I watched him win the Boston Marathon 2014. It will be cool to see him long before I get to the half way point as he hopefully has a large lead. Best part of an out and back course is seeing the elites running toward you. Participant and fan all in one.

Bix 7 Results 2013

The weather was perfect for fast times and even better memories. Well, that is if you were fortunate to hit the starting line this morning. After 10 years in a row of running my favorite race, the streak came to an end. Yeah, I am a bit sad, however I will look forward to next year’s Bix and will take this time to reflect on some fun moments over the last 10.

10. Seeing Bill Rodgers in jeans 10 minutes before the race and thinking, “Too bad Bill is not running this year, wonder what is wrong with him.” and then having him pass me at the turnaround. I tried to keep up with him for the next mile, which was great hearing the fans yell his name. I pretended my name was Bill to use the extra support as motivation to keep going hard. He eventually did drop me, but I did have my best time that year.

9, The rain year. Hiding under a bank’s overhang to stay dry before the race. Being soaked for most of the race and then a good 1/2 hour after the race at the post race party. Not the best memory, but there is always the most of something race and this was the most drenched race.

8. The Marilyn Monroes. Several ladies all dressed in all white Marilyn outfits running and then dancing at the post race party. Good for a chuckle and a smile every year.

7. Brady Street Hill. Right off the bat a 1/4 mile hill that keeps the disciplined runners honest and the fools in side stitches or worse. Even effort is the key here.

6. Post Race Party. I will admit it was better when they had live bands, yet it still remains the best post race party in the land. Plenty of food and drink to satisfy all that complete the full hilly 7 miles.

Bix 7 Results

A perfect day for a Bix 7 mile run. Perfect in that it didn’t rain. Last year it just poured before the race, some during and after. Like last year I was drenched by the end of the run. Hot and humid makes for a personal rain and less than expected results.

I had hoped for a 49 minute or less finish given my recent race times and weight loss since last summer. The hills make it difficult to gage other race performance to predict for the Bix. It takes a year to forget how the  infamous Brady Street hill will treat you or trick you into thinking you’re ready for the rest of  7 miles of  hills in the heat.

Like I have said in past blogs, I train on hills up to 24 miles. What Bix does that can’t be simulated in training unless you have 18,000 friends, is pack you in and makes you fight for every foot. A big city marathon is similar, yet usually you can break free after 2 miles. At Bix the first 3-4 miles are a fight and in a 7 miles race that doesn’t leave a lot time for make up pace.

The Brady Street hill, which greets you at the beginning of the race, now throws you down it in the last mile. For most people this is a good thing, but for me and my bum right knee, this is no pleasure cruise. Down hills have been the bane of my running existence. I can usually pass peeps on ascents and get passed back and then some on the declines. Yesterday was no exception, which was compounded by a calf cramp that took no liking to the negative slope.

After two calf massages and the arrival of  level ground, I was able to finish with a decent kick. My time was 4.5 minutes off of my goal, but I will take it considering all the other stuff.

Now on the best post race party in all of the land. The only criticism of which is the lack of a live band the last 2 years. Bix bring back the band, DJs are the thing of morning drive time not street celebrations.

Bix 7 Run Preparation

Living in Mt. Vernon, Ia, I am fortunate enough to be relatively close ( a morning drive to the race) from the Bix 7 road race. Mt. Vernon is hilly, which makes it the perfect locale for training for the Bix. Sweating it out on the hills in and around  MV is a luxury and not a burden. I can’t imagine training for Bix in a city like Chicago where you are lucky to live near a foot bridge with any kind of evaluation to it. I have gone for training runs on the shores of Lake Michigan, which are an awesome sight and very relaxing, but if I want to be prepared for Bix, give me some hills.

Now I have trained in the foot hills of the Rockies in Colorado and I must admit that is where I truly enjoy running the most. Once the kids have grown maybe I will move there, but for now I will take the hills of MV to get me to where I want to go, the finish line at the Bix 7.

Bix 7 Mile Race

One week from the best run road race in the USA, the Bix 7 in Davenport, IA, one of  the Quad Cities on the border of Iowa and Illinois. A challenging seven mile course, which features hills to bust lungs and test your guts. Sound fun? Well the test of the race is rewarded not with A grades, but with an awesome post race party with more food and beverage than even a big city marathon.

I could go on and on about the Bix, but words do not do it justice. Just trust me and try it sometime soon. Maybe even next Saturday July 3oth at 8:00am CDT.

Chicago Training Off and Running

The gun has fired on my first week of my 18 week Chicago Marathon Training. Wow another 18 weeks. It seems like not so long ago (January 10th to be exact) I started my training for Fargo. It is weird to have that many weeks ahead of me again, but I am psyched to put Fargo behind me and really dig in to another chance at Boston glory. I have tweaked my schedule and am going back to long long runs of 20-24 miles. I hope the more familar plan will give me the more desired results.

I have a few 1/2 marathons planned for the summer as well as the most awesome race of all time, the Bix 7 miler. If you haven’t already, put the Bix 7 on your list as it is the best race in the midwest. Google that  bad boy.
