Since You Probably Won’t Read This Away….

For 40 plus years I have searched for the perfect workout to both satisfy my fitness goals and keep me entertained at the same time. Well, I finally found it…..Homeless Person Hurdles. Yeah, it’s in really poor taste and illegal in some countries, but heck why not give hope to the hopeless by bounding over a few on your morning run. Better yet carry loose change in our pockets and some might fall out mid-flight. Can you say BONUS!

This was a really poor attempt at humor, but nobody has been reading this blog lately, so I doubt I hurt too many feelings especially since the homeless probably don’t have working laptops with an active internet connections. But if you are homeless and read this blog after stumbling into a library, I am sorry.

If you actually read this far, I will say that a very high percentage of the contents of this blog are intended for the promotion of good healthy activities. Please take a look at the other 158 blog entries and I am sure if you give it a chance, you will find benefit from most of them. Peace. No humans nor any animals were harmed in the making of this blog.

Nice Day Even Better Run

Summer heat brings the challenge of finding a good time to run. Beat the heat morning runs tend to be the best bet. Yet the schedule doesn’t always allow for the opportune run  to come at the opportune time, so it is definitely pleasing when nature takes a break from the fry.

Today was one of those cooler days (at least for a little while) to get that perfect run in. After days of struggling through the sauna, I felt like my legs were live again. The miles just came and went like no effort was being employed. Swift yet relaxed. The feeling is not completely unknown, however it has been on vacation since last fall, maybe longer.

Running can  be a lot of chasing rainbows and never seeing the pot of gold. Today was one of days where the chase was on and riches were had (even though only in spirit).

Habit of Bad Habits

To say I like to over do things I like to do would be an understatement. A lot of the good and even more of the bad. If I didn’t run I would probably weigh 300 pounds. Running makes me not want to do the bad things, but I still over eat from time to time and a day off from running makes me hungry or bored or both.

We all have different reasons to run. I love it and it loves me. At least that’s what it has been telling me lately. From the books I have read and the hills I have climbed, it has all come together to make it the most life affirming choice of this life.

The book Born to Run by Christopher McDougall notes that the ability to love and running do have a connection. Looking back on my life, I was not capable of love before I started running. Not sure if the connection runs that deep, but I am willing to run with it. Oh golly!

I didn’t care much for myself, before I starting running. I couldn’t maintain a relationship before I started running. I was only successful at escaping from my problems before I ran with them and worked them out.

Run far and find….yourself.

With the struggles of being an over 40 endurance runner comes the realization that you may never regain the speed of yesterdecade. I know my top speed was so 20 years ago. That being said I was encouraged by my speed workout tonight. The winter was long and frustrating. Today changed all that. The mile splits listed in the title turned months of dubious results into feelings of hope for a successful marathon.

With a goal marathon pace of a modest 7:20 per mile, the speed workout reveals the can do nature of the goal itself. If the game day magic comes through and 7:20 feels easy in the first half then I will notch it up for a second half negative split. I have learned from too many slower second halves to get too aggressive in the first half and then not have enough guts left to finish strong.

Lessons are learned hard in the marathon. Prepare, plan and hope. Be under control in the front for a better finish.

It has been a fun ride so far and I am looking forward to the next 100 plus blogs. One marathon is just around the corner in Fargo on May 21st. Chicago in the Fall. I hope everyone has found some encouraging words and will continue their training. 100 over and out.

Marathon Motivations

As exciting it is to start a marathon, what we all want is to finish. It is going to hurt, you will need to mentally overcome and need to fight to the finish. Why do we put ourselves through this pain? Personal satisfaction, glory or fame? What the movie The Spirit of the Marathon has to say about why we run marathons is that once you have finished a marathon you believe you can do anything.

No matter where your life takes you, hope can be found in many different ways. Choosing to make improvements in your life starts with discovering goals and setting out to accomplish them. Be willing to fight for your goals and you will see the improvements. Hope for a better tomorrow starts with hope. Hope will lead to vision and vision will lead to the work at foot. Get working and anything is possible. Finishing one marathon might just be the start.

Adding running to your life will add rhythm to your life. Running by itself has rhythm. The act of placing running in your daily plan gives your life a beat that makes all other aspects of your life better.
