Since You Probably Won’t Read This Away….

For 40 plus years I have searched for the perfect workout to both satisfy my fitness goals and keep me entertained at the same time. Well, I finally found it…..Homeless Person Hurdles. Yeah, it’s in really poor taste and illegal in some countries, but heck why not give hope to the hopeless by bounding over a few on your morning run. Better yet carry loose change in our pockets and some might fall out mid-flight. Can you say BONUS!

This was a really poor attempt at humor, but nobody has been reading this blog lately, so I doubt I hurt too many feelings especially since the homeless probably don’t have working laptops with an active internet connections. But if you are homeless and read this blog after stumbling into a library, I am sorry.

If you actually read this far, I will say that a very high percentage of the contents of this blog are intended for the promotion of good healthy activities. Please take a look at the other 158 blog entries and I am sure if you give it a chance, you will find benefit from most of them. Peace. No humans nor any animals were harmed in the making of this blog.

Fonzie the Good Hood

I may have been a bit delirious after an 8 mile run, while mowing the lawn. I kept thinking about having  a comedian say, “It’s not called a Fonzie scheme, it’s called a Ponzi scheme, Fonzie was a good hood.” Not sure if that ever was part of a stand up routine, but it seems to have a moral to the story. One of those “Don’t judge a book by its cover” kind of story.

Some would say that running has a Ponzi vs. Fonzie kind of rep. Most non-runners don’t run because they say it is boring. I have said if running is boring then you are not using both sides of your brain. Obviously the brain power that it takes to run is not much, yet the brain can take care of so many other thoughts and needs while running. Personally I come up with song ideas and start to solve work and family issues while running. The exercise part is a given, yet the thinking part is forgotten.

Now what does the Ponzi vs. Fonzie have to do with running at all? Well Ponzi was trying to sell you a bill of goods and Fonzie was just cool. So when someone says running is a bunch of boring bunk, you can say if you tried it, you would find it to be really cool.

Running song of the day: Feelin’ Stronger Every Day by Chicago is one of those songs that gives you a powerful boast right when the miles are taking their toll on a long run or marathon. Program it to play around mile 20 and feel the benefits.

Nice Day Even Better Run

Summer heat brings the challenge of finding a good time to run. Beat the heat morning runs tend to be the best bet. Yet the schedule doesn’t always allow for the opportune run  to come at the opportune time, so it is definitely pleasing when nature takes a break from the fry.

Today was one of those cooler days (at least for a little while) to get that perfect run in. After days of struggling through the sauna, I felt like my legs were live again. The miles just came and went like no effort was being employed. Swift yet relaxed. The feeling is not completely unknown, however it has been on vacation since last fall, maybe longer.

Running can  be a lot of chasing rainbows and never seeing the pot of gold. Today was one of days where the chase was on and riches were had (even though only in spirit).

Balance

Father’s Day seems to be a logical restart to the blog that has been a big part of my life and my family.  As the last entry noted I joined a band and the added hobby took too much time away from running consistantly to have time to write about it as well. My bad.

As with any activity of merit there is always the give and take of work, family, life and death, The death part becomes more of a concern over 40 as parents, aunts and uncles are just of that age where time is running out. Throw in the unexpected diagnosis or accident and it is a mine field to make it a year or 2 without having the death of a significant person throw off one’s own healthful concerns. It may be self to write about it in these terms, but remember without your health then you become someone else’s unexpected family death.

Running is one of those hobbies that should not be taken for granted. Finding that balance to make it a priority is important to both yourself and your family. Think about the stress that is released on that run and then think about that since that stress is now gone it is not turned on your family since it is gone, gone, gone…. Gone enough? Ok.

I run during the week during my lunch hour and just one weekend long run, so time away from my family is limited.  There is time out there,  just need to find it.

Bix 7 2012

Last year at this time I had run a marathon, 1/2 marathon, 5k, 8k, 10k and 10 mile race. My seventh race of 2011 would be the 7 mile Bix 7 race in Davenport, IA. 2012 has been raceless so far, but one thing for sure is the Bix 7. Over the last 9 years there has only been one appointment race in my book and that is the Bix 7.

Challenging hills, over 10,000 runners and a great after run party make for good times for those who can handle it. If you haven’t already, give it a shot. The Bix 7 will not disappoint.

2011 Marathon season is coming to a close and as I look back I could have done a lot of things different and maybe would have come through with more desired results. Oh such is the life of a marathon runner.

Two big vastly different mistakes with similar lack luster results.

One the bright side I finished my 7th marathon with no career DNF’s. 2012 will not bring a Boston Marathon, however I just want to run and enjoy the experience. Priorities may change, but one thing stays the same – honest effort and an honest life. Ok that may be 2 things.

Habit of Bad Habits

To say I like to over do things I like to do would be an understatement. A lot of the good and even more of the bad. If I didn’t run I would probably weigh 300 pounds. Running makes me not want to do the bad things, but I still over eat from time to time and a day off from running makes me hungry or bored or both.

We all have different reasons to run. I love it and it loves me. At least that’s what it has been telling me lately. From the books I have read and the hills I have climbed, it has all come together to make it the most life affirming choice of this life.

The book Born to Run by Christopher McDougall notes that the ability to love and running do have a connection. Looking back on my life, I was not capable of love before I started running. Not sure if the connection runs that deep, but I am willing to run with it. Oh golly!

I didn’t care much for myself, before I starting running. I couldn’t maintain a relationship before I started running. I was only successful at escaping from my problems before I ran with them and worked them out.

Run far and find….yourself.

Smile Maybe Even Laugh

A co-worker of mine (before he knew that I am a runner) said to me, “I don’t understand runners they always look so miserable when they run. I have a neighbor, who runs all the time and he never looks like he is enjoying himself.” I said you probably see him at the end of a run and no runner looks like they are enjoying themselves at the end of a run.

After that conversation I made an effort to think back to when I first started running. I starting running to fill a void that injuries had created. I couldn’t play rugby anymore and I needed a stress release. In the beginning I didn’t love running, but I grew to love it fairly quickly and it became part of my lifestyle. So if I love running, why don’t I appear to love it when I do it? I set out to make a change.

Now I will break out with a goofy smile or even laugh while running. I will admit it wasn’t natural at first, but the more I did it, the more I felt better about my running. I have been able to overcome “bad patches” aka times you feel awful when running by smiling and/or laughing. I even have received such a rush from doing so, that the top of my head tingles and I forget all about any pain or discomfort.

At a 10 mile race earlier this year, a fellow runner told me I was the most relaxed runner he had ever seen. Maybe this smiling thing will change the perception of us by non-runners, who will then join the crew.

Give it a try and see how you (and those who see you running)  feel.
